Inspired by a deck of cards featuring the Scottish monarchs, Scotland’s Chequered Throne® was born from a desire to explore and re-imagine 15 stories that shaped the succession of Scotland’s monarchs. As an artist passionate about uncovering the overlooked corners of Scottish history, I created this collection to make those stories feel vivid and emotionally resonant - engaging people in a way historical texts often don’t.

This image, “Alexander II: Borderline,” depicts the moment Alexander II, King of Scots signed the Treaty of York in 1237 - a landmark agreement that defined the Scottish-English border and ushered in a rare period of peace between the two nations. Set during what many consider a golden age in Scotland’s past, this image captures not just a moment of political strategy, but a moment of vision and significant development of Scotland.

I hope viewers feel a connection - not just to the image, but to the story behind it. I want people to be curious, to ask questions, to explore more of Scotland’s rich and complicated past. My goal is to inspire a sense of wonder, pride, and reflection, and perhaps even encourage someone to walk in the footsteps of these stories, exploring Scotland for themselves.

I used levitation photography to give the images a surreal, elevated feel: reflecting the symbolic "higher position" of monarchs and the weight of their decisions. Every object in the scene, including a handcrafted map of Scotland, has been thoughtfully chosen and positioned to echo the specific narrative. Lighting is used deliberately to shape the mood and atmosphere of each image depending on the monarch’s story.
