The village of Beith in North Ayrshire is situated on higher ground. If you want to go west from there, the road takes you down into a kind of dip in the land, across the railway lines and on for about a mile before the land rises again towards the hills, on the other side of which you find the Clyde coast. I stood in a field, downhill from the village, with a sketch-book and from the drawing done there, that gave me the start, did this painting. There isn't much detail in it. Its quite atmospheric. Its a winter depiction as you can see, perhaps, from the sky and from the absence of leaves on those scraggy, blue, trees in the foreground. It is on a canvas and surrounded by a simple wooden frame of my own making measuring 74 by 98 cms.
