Fine Art Giclee Print | Includes historical story card & certificate of authenticity

Inspired by a deck of cards featuring the Scottish monarchs, Scotland’s Chequered Throne® was born from a desire to explore and re-imagine 15 stories that shaped the succession of Scotland’s monarchs. As an artist passionate about uncovering the overlooked corners of Scottish history, I created this collection to make those stories feel vivid and emotionally resonant - engaging people in a way historical texts often don’t.

This image, “James II: Backfired,” tells the dramatic and tragic story of James II, King of Scots, who died unexpectedly during the siege of Roxburgh Castle in 1460 when one of his cannons exploded. Caught in the chaos of warfare, innovation and his obsession with cannons, his death was a shocking twist in Scotland’s Chequered Throne. This image captures the tension, drama and cruel irony of his downfall at the hands of his own artillery. It’s a surreal and poignant portrayal of how power, progress, and peril often collide.

I hope viewers feel a connection - not just to the image, but to the story behind it. I want people to be curious, to ask questions, to explore more of Scotland’s rich and complicated past. My goal is to inspire a sense of wonder, pride, and reflection, and perhaps even encourage someone to walk in the footsteps of these stories, exploring Scotland for themselves.

I used levitation photography to give the images a surreal, elevated feel: reflecting the symbolic "higher position" of monarchs and the weight of their decisions. Every object in the scene, including a handcrafted map of Scotland, has been thoughtfully chosen and positioned to echo the specific narrative. Lighting is used deliberately to shape the mood and atmosphere of each image depending on the monarch’s story.
