Portrait of French revolutionary Maximillion Robespierre, a revolutionary who became a dictator and was the main architect of the Terror, that resulted in the deaths of thousands of people under the guillotine. The changes in Robespierre’s behaviour and beliefs from the beginning of the revolution in 1789 to the terror in the early 1790s is extraordinary- he initially opposed the death penalty! It’s hard not to conclude that he had serious mental health problems.
