That little church is very old, going back to about 1590. More importantly, it was the church that John Witherspoon was minister of for about 13 years in the 1740's and 50's. Witherspoon went on (decades later) to be prominent in the American War of Independence and was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence and then, subsequently became the rector of Princeton University. He fought for, in effect, the English against the Jacobites in the 1740's, for the Americans against the British in the 1770's (by then having concluded that Scotland's relationship with England was unequal... which is an understatement of gigantic proportions) and he became a revolutionary and a founding father of the USA. None of which prevented him from owning slaves. That, I suppose, is the complicated and contradictory world we live in! What can I say about the painting itself? It's on board and overwhelmingly its painted with acrylics. Its been revisited by me at least twice so there are at least 2 paintings underneath it. It is an impressionist painting that makes use of lots of strokes of thickish paint. I used dabs of cooler colour to throw those hills way into the distance. The colours of the sky are echoed in the colours of the road that sweeps around the foreground and toward the distant hills. The ochre colours in the foreground are echoed in the warm colours in the clouds in the sky. It is surrounded by a simple frame of my own construction and taking account of the frame it measures 74 by 63 cms while the actual painting is 50 by 40 cms.
