I was struggling with several issues. I was recovering from a severe traumatic brain injury where my prognosis was not positive and I was rebuilding my life from this. This had involved coma, relearning to read, write, walk and talk. In addition, I was also hoping to have a baby - IVF, miscarriage, pregnancy, birth and early motherhood. I found all of these things difficult. During that I went about my life without showing the difficulty I felt, and this grew hard to maintain. My facial expression here depicts the feelings I had over that time and the raw, true emotion I felt. I hid these feelings in my life and I wished to show them in this portrait.
